October 13, 2009, USA TODAY — Even before TV's Stand Up to Cancer special raised more than $100 million for research with a star-studded, prime-time broadcast in September 2008, Hollywood and its leading charitable arm, the Entertainment Industry Foundation, were hunting for another major initiative to support.

NEW YORK, Augus 24, 2009 —  For the seventh year in a row, Bloomingdale's will host a charity shopping night in each of its stores -- the Fashionable Fundraiser in Black and White. Held each February and August, the Fashionable Fundraiser helps raise awareness and funds for national and local charities. This August, Bloomingdale's will partner with amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, for the four-day event, running from Thursday, August 27 through Sunday, August 30.

IRVINE, Calif., June 2, 2009 — Billabong USA is proud to announce the highly acclaimed alt-rockers The Airborne Toxic Event and indie pop stars Iglu & Hartly will perform live at the 3rd Annual Design For Humanity event on June 17, 2009 at Avalon/Bardot in Hollywood. Design for Humanity, Billabong's charitable initiative, will benefit charity: water (charitywater.org), a non-profit organization that works to bring clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. One hundred percent of ticket sale proceeds will go to charity: water.

Controversial fundraiser Dan Pallotta believes that in order for charities to do their jobs and do them well, they must operate more like the private sector: Salaries must be comparable to those in business, donations should be spent on advertising, and nonprofits should be permitted to invest in the long term.
