Infographic: The Impact of Nonprofits on the Economy

Even as the economic turmoil and other factors have put a strain on fundraisers the past four years, giving continues to have a big impact on the economy. Illustrating that point, nonprofit consulting and social-media management company the Rebecca Gordon Group developed an infographic on “Nonprofits’ Impact on the Economy.”

Here are a few notes from the infographic, which you can view at right:

  • Nonprofit employment increased in all 45 states reporting data for the infographic from 2000-2010, a 2.1 percent increase. Meanwhile, for-profit employment decreased by 0.6 percent during the same time period.
  • The nonprofit sector employs 10.7 million people.
  • 75 percent of giving came from individuals in 2011, 13 percent from foundations, 7 percent from bequests and 5 percent from corporations.
