RESTON, VA, May 11, 2009 — .ORG, The Public Interest Registry (www.pir.org) announces the finalists of the first-ever NTC .ORG Ambassador Awards following the successful Nonprofit Technology Conference in San Francisco, CA. This award showcases the innovative and trend-setting ways .ORGs are using technology and social media to advance their mission, grow membership, and broaden awareness and visibility for their work and members. There were 4 finalists and 1 winner chosen among the many submissions received.

Grizzard Communications Group recently held a conference, Winning Strategies in Challenging Times, focusing on effective and efficient ways of communicating to donors during difficult economic times. The conference was held February 24th – 26th and featured a live panel discussion presented in the online virtual world of Second Life.  Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary of The Salvation Army, along with other IT communications associates from Alexandria, VA and Reston, PA participated in a panel discussion as animated “Avatars.”

The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region announced today that its Neighbors in Need Fund is awarding $455,000 in grants to 27 charities that provide essential services such as food, clothing, emergency financial assistance, and shelter to needy residents in Northern Virginia, Montgomery County, Prince George's County, MD, and the District of Columbia. Two additional grants totaling $40,000 will help community-based nonprofit organizations work more efficiently during and beyond these difficult economic times. The Neighbors in Need Fund is the only regionwide grantmaking program of its kind.

America's 102 most outstanding youth volunteers — two from each state and the District of Columbia — were named State Honorees today by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism. The awards program, now in its 14th year, is conducted by Prudential Financial, Inc. in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

GoodDogz.org is a Reston, Va.-based nonprofit that informs people about dog selection and care, and assists canine rescue groups with a variety of responsibilities.
