Nonprofits cheered a successful vote in the House on Wednesday that would make several tax breaks for charitable giving permanent, but the legislation faces a steep climb to become law. The America Gives More Act, which passed the House on a 279-137 vote, would provide tax deductions for gifts of food to food banks, land set aside for conservation and gifts to charities made directly from individual retirement accounts. The legislation would also simplify the foundation excise tax.

New York’s Jewish not-for-profits are falling like dominoes. Scandals have rocked some of the most prominent agencies in UJA-Federation of New York’s network in recent weeks, with one agency announcing in February that it would shut down, another losing its executive director amid reports of a federal probe and a third seeking mergers to preserve its services.
In all, four UJA-Federation network agencies have been hit by scandal since mid-2013. Three have lost their top officers in connection with alleged or admitted malfeasance.
The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has awarded its highest professional certification, the Advanced Certified Fundraising Executive (ACFRE), to Ann Charles Watts, an organizational development consultant specializing in resource development serving Habitat for Humanity International, and Cathy Cessna, director of business, program and fund development at Ingleside Homes Inc.
Available only to senior-level fundraisers who have worked in the profession for 10 or more years, the ACFRE is a distinguished achievement earned by only 104 professionals since the inception of the program in 1992.
