LOS ANGELES — Television co-host and news correspondent Hoda Kotb and fashion designer Kay Unger will receive City of Hope’s top philanthropic honor, The Spirit of Life® Award, on Monday, May 4, at the Waldorf=Astoria, with top news media, fashion and entertainment leaders attending. Hosted by City of Hope’s East End Chapter/Jeanne Kaye League, the “Woman of the Year” luncheon will honor these two women who have made notable contributions to their professions, their community and to charitable causes. Kotb and Unger, both cancer survivors, are both staunch advocates for the medical advancement and treatment of cancer.

Rebuilding Together St. Louis and Rebuilding Together Philadelphia Named Winners of the 'HGTV Change the World. Start at Home' Online Contest

WASHINGTON, March 30, 2009 — Rebuilding Together, the nation's leading nonprofit organization working to preserve affordable homeownership, HGTV and partners will once again team up to Change the World. As part of the HGTV Change the World. Start at Home campaign, online voters named veterans' group homes Windsor Transitional House in St. Louis, Mo., and the Housing for Homeless Vets Corp. located on Romain Street in Philadelphia, Pa., as the winners of the campaign's online vote. The winning projects will receive much-needed renovations to make the homes more energy efficient and enjoyable for residents. In addition, the makeovers also will be featured in an HGTV special in October 2009.

X PRIZE Foundation Appoints Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong as Chairman of the Life Sciences Prize Group Steering Committee

The X PRIZE Foundation, an educational nonprofit prize institute dedicated to fostering radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity, today announced the appointment of Patrick Soon-Shiong, M.D., as Chairman of its Life Sciences Prize Group Steering Committee (GSC). Under Dr. Soon-Shiong's direction, the GSC will steer the direction of future Life Science related X PRIZEs to ensure that they address the audacious grand challenges where market failures currently exist. The Life Sciences GSC will address such subjects as healthcare, genomics, proteonomics, bionics/human augmentation, rapid disease detection, disease prevention, human longevity and artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis.

First-Ever $250,000 National Nonprofit Collaboration Prize Contest Ends in Tie Between Two Successful Mergers

Today, the Phoenix-based Lodestar Foundation and Arizona-Indiana-Michigan (AIM) Alliance presented a $250,000 national award as the first-ever Collaboration Prize to two groups — the Museum of Nature & Science in Dallas, Texas and the YMCA & JCC of Greater Toledo — at a luncheon ceremony in Scottsdale, AZ. Originally intended as a $250,000 award to one winner, the contest resulted in a tie, with each winner taking home $125,000.

The New York Times Company Announces the 10 Semifinalists for the Third Annual Nonprofit Excellence Awards

The New York Times Company announced today the 10 semifinalists for the 2009 New York Times Company Nonprofit Excellence Awards. Now in its third year, the awards honor outstanding management practices and encourage innovation and communication among New York's large and diverse nonprofit community. In 2007, The Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York (NPCC) and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) joined the Times Company in the establishment of this program. All nonprofit organizations based in and serving New York City, Long Island and Westchester are eligible to apply. The application period ended for the 2009 submissions on Nov. 21, 2008. The organizations, which vary in size and in the types of services they offer the community, were chosen by the program's selection committee for their outstanding management.
