Sigma Chi International Fraternity Makes $10 Million Commitment to Cancer Research at Huntsman Cancer Institute
The Sigma Chi International Fraternity recently announced a seven-year, $10 million fundraising commitment in support of its national philanthropic partner Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI). In honor of the commitment, HCI named the sixth floor of Huntsman Cancer Hospital at HCI "The Sigma Chi International Fraternity Sixth Floor." The floor features a gourmet cafeteria, a multi-purpose room for wellness and religious services, a cancer learning center and a sky bridge connecting the research facility to the hospital.
“Everyone who walks through our doors and onto this floor will know that an entire generation is working on their behalf to beat this horrible disease,” said Jon M. Huntsman Sr., HCI founder and chief benefactor, and Sigma Chi member. “To our researchers, patients and caregivers, this will be a reminder that young people all around the United States and Canada are pulling for them.”
More than 85 Sigma Chis were present at the announcement, which took place on the sixth floor of HCI. They included Jon M. Huntsman Sr.; David Huntsman, Huntsman Cancer Foundation CEO; Michael Greenberg, Grand Consul of Sigma Chi Fraternity; Brandon Plewe, HCI patient and Sigma Chi member; 50 undergraduate representatives from Sigma Chi chapters around North America; and the top 20 fundraising chapters of Sigma Chi.
“The Sigma Chi International Fraternity Sixth Floor is a healing space for patients and their families, reinforcing our values of friendship, justice and learning,” said Greenberg. “We believe this is the generation to end cancer and we believe Huntsman Cancer Institute is the place to make this happen.”
“This gift represents huge efforts across campuses in North America,” added Plewe. “I am proud that our fraternity has dedicated its efforts to people like me and this place that gave me a fighting chance.”
The partnership between Sigma Chi and HCI has seen major growth since 2005, when HCI was named a preferred charity for the fraternity. In 2013, Huntsman Cancer Foundation was named the sole philanthropic partner of Sigma Chi. To date, Sigma Chi has raised more than $3 million for cancer research at HCI.
