Independent Sector Launches State Dashboard on Financial Insecurity in the Nonprofit Workforce
Independent Sector (IS), in collaboration with United for ALICE, announced the launch of the ALICE Nonprofit Workforce Dashboard — an interactive database with thousands of data points shedding new light on the 22% of nonprofit workers facing financial insecurity. The dashboard is built on research released in last year’s ALICE in the Nonprofit Workforce: A Study of Financial Hardship report, a study on the status of nonprofit workers categorized as Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE). Alongside national data, this dashboard will also provide state-level data on nonprofit workers’ financial status, with tools allowing users to identify specific population trends by demographic and category of hardship.
The ALICE Nonprofit Workforce Dashboard is built on research data collected in 2023, the most recent year for which data is available. The data shows that 5% of nonprofit workers live in poverty, while an additional 17% fall beneath the ALICE threshold, a measure reflecting nonprofit employees that live in households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than it costs to survive in the counties where they live.
"In every conversation I have with my partners across the nonprofit sector, the financial pain experienced by staff is a source of constant concern. Skyrocketing housing costs, persistent inflation, and cuts to nonprofit funding sources are pushing our most vulnerable workers to the brink — and when our nonprofit workers are hurting, our communities hurt too," said Independent Sector President and CEO Dr. Akilah Watkins. "This report reflects in data a truth that so many of us already know: our workers are struggling. But the ALICE Nonprofit Workforce Dashboard provides a lot more than just bad news; it gives researchers and advocates access to the specific data they need to investigate the causes, impacts, and possible solutions to the workforce challenges we face."
