What You Missed at AFP ICON 2023
Whether you attended or missed 2023’s AFP ICON, in which more than 3,600 attendees gathered to learn the latest fundraising tactics, NonProfit PRO has you covered. Here’s the roundup of the sessions we covered in New Orleans.
The Fundraising Effectiveness Project released its quarterly report during the conference. Though the number of donors have been declining, donations dollars also began dropping as a result of the addition of 2022’s fourth-quarter figures.
Three fundraisers — Regina Sharma, development director of the Detroit Justice Center; Lejla Bajgoric, associate development director at the Detroit Justice Center; and Douglas Manigault III, CFRE, vice president of development at the State Innovation Exchange — explained how the Detroit Justice Center not only built its development department but converted its 2020 crisis donors into long-term supporters in their session, “Transitioning Crisis Donors to Mission Donors.”
Anthony Pomonis, CFRE, and Tara Adams — co-founders of Cognitive Empowerment Consulting, and fundraisers at University of Central Florida and North Carolina State University, respectively — share the four best practices to establish donative capacity in their session, “Cognitive Impairment in Donors: Are You Prepared?”
As part of the greatest wealth transfer, there’s an opportunity for nonprofits to educate LGBTQ+ baby boomers about planned giving. Renee Columbo, chief development officer, and Leah Munnelly, deputy director of development at New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender (LGBT) Community Center, as well as Dominic M. Pepper, CFRE, executive director at the Lesher Family Foundation, shared ideas for welcoming LGBTQ+ donors to your cause in their session, “Belonging and Exclusion: Creating Space for Growing LGBTQ Donors.”
As America becomes more diverse, nonprofits need to ensure they’re fundraising efforts are reaching diverse audiences. By 2050, it is estimated that non-Hispanic white individuals will no longer be in the majority in America. Ivan Leon, chief strategist at Kerux Group, presented how to reach these demographics in his session, “The Multicultural Majority: Who They Are and How They Are Changing Fundraising.”
