"While other service organizations helping the homeless have had to cut their services due to the downturn in the economy, Union Rescue Mission expanded its services," Mooradian says. "It took a great deal of faith to be able to step up to meet the growing needs of the community; it took a great deal of sacrifice on the part of Union Rescue Mission staff, who gave up 10 percent of their salaries and a number of benefits; and it took a community of donors who demonstrated their faith in the work of Union Rescue Mission.
"To be able to raise this level of funding at a time when the economy is suffering and many people are out of work is a wonderful testament to Union Rescue Mission's excellent reputation and acknowledgment of its service to the Los Angeles community for the last 119 years," she adds.
