Government Shutdown Threatens to Halt Nonprofit Services Millions Rely On
The National Council of Nonprofits, a large network of nonprofits, cautioned that a federal government shutdown would put essential community services at risk, from food banks and shelters to childcare centers, crisis hotlines, and senior care.
“Nonprofits are the safety net in every community,” said Diane Yentel, president and CEO of the National Council of Nonprofits. “When the government shuts down, payments stall, contracts don’t get renewed, and families could lose access to services they depend on. These disruptions hurt real people, parents searching for childcare, survivors needing a safe place to go, or veterans waiting on housing. Congress needs to act to keep the government open and fully funded.”
How a long-term shutdown impacts communities
- Payments are frozen. Federal staff who process reimbursements are furloughed, leaving nonprofits waiting weeks or months for funding they have already earned.
- Services are disrupted. Nonprofits cannot renew grants or contracts, forcing some programs to cut back staff or even close. Families may lose access to childcare, rental assistance, or crisis response.
- Projects stall and costs rise. Community projects to build affordable housing, health clinics, or fire stations are put on hold. Each day of delay makes them more expensive to finish.
- Demand goes up while funding goes down. Families often turn to nonprofits when government support stops. But without federal dollars flowing, organizations have fewer resources to meet greater need.
“Shutdowns aren’t just political drama in D.C.,” Yentel added. “They ripple outward, straining the nonprofits that keep communities safe, fed, and cared for. Lawmakers need to remember that behind every delayed payment is a shelter struggling to keep its doors open or a family wondering where to turn.”
